What is Spa Water?

Spa water refers to fresh drinking water infused with fruits, veggies, or herbs. Served chilled or iced, these infusions are refreshing on a hot day – and provide a minor boost of micronutrients.

While the term ‘spa water’ may sound new and flashy, the tradition of crafting infusions with fresh fruit is anything but new. Agua fresca and citronnade are a few examples of how this technique – soaking fruit in water – has been enjoyed in many parts of the world for generations.

As the idea of fruit-infused water gains a new audience, all sorts of creative flavor combinations are gaining popularity. Cucumber, berries, sage, mint, watermelon – these fresh ingredients can really jazz up a plain glass of water!

3 Ways to Enjoy Spa Water

  • Iced
  • Shaken & Strained
  • Blended

Health Benefits of Soaking Fruit in Water

Beyond adding flavor, soaking fruits and veggies in water can actually release a small number of micronutrients, making the final beverage a healthy concoction. With that said, you shouldn’t count on getting a big portion of vitamins and minerals from spa water. Soaking fruit in water only releases a small amount of nutrients.

The bigger health benefit is actually using spa water as an aid in staying sufficiently hydrated. On average, adults should aim for drinking 8 glasses of water a day – more if doing strenuous exercise. For folks who have a hard time reaching that goal, spa water can help. Why? Because it tastes so darn good!

Best Fruits & Herbs for a Delicious Drink

Essentially any fruits or herbs can add flavor to your water. For simple spa water with a hint of flavor, try soaking a single ingredient, like:

  • Cucumber
  • Watermelon
  • Cantaloupe
  • Strawberries
  • Orange Slices
  • Mint

If you’re craving spa water with a deeper flavor profile, try one of these creative combos:

  • Strawberries, Lemon and Basil
  • Watermelon and Mint
  • Cantaloupe, Lime, Mint and Honey
  • Strawberries, Pineapple and Sage

How Long to Leave Fruits/Herbs in Spa Water

Most recipes recommend soaking ingredients for 2-4 hours, or overnight while refrigerated. Because fruits can become funky and rot if left submerged too long, it’s best to keep these rules in mind.

First, don’t leave spa water at room temperature for more than 4 hours. Second, if you plan on making a large pitcher or saving some for later, it’s best to strain the water after the initial soaking and then immediately refrigerate what’s left over. Strained and refrigerated spa water should be enjoyed within 3 days.

Tasty and refreshing, drinking spa water is a great way to get extra nutrients and stay hydrated – especially on a warm day, after a workout, or with brunch. Enjoy!
